Miter saw angles chart: starting settings, not guarantees

A chart quickly splits common included angles into two equal miters. It cannot account for walls that are out of square, saw-scale conventions, asymmetric joints, stock movement, or calibration.

Split the measured included corner.

The table below shows pure geometry for two symmetric pieces. “Each physical miter” describes the angle between each joint face and its adjoining finished direction. Many miter saw scales use zero at a square crosscut, so the displayed machine setting may be the complementary offset.

Use the measured corner rather than choosing the nearest architectural label. A room corner called square can vary enough to open a long casing joint.

Separate interior angle from saw-scale setting.

A regular polygon has equal sides and equal turns, but builders may describe its interior angle, exterior turn, or per-piece miter. For an n-sided closed frame, the familiar saw miter offset is 180 divided by n: a square uses 45, hexagon 30, and octagon 22.5 on a conventional zero-at-square scale.

Do not mix that scale offset with the physical half-angle shown above. Sketch one corner and label the fence line, stock direction, cut face, and interior before setting the saw.

A flat chart does not solve sloped work.

Crown molding, splayed boxes, tapered planters, and other sloped assemblies require both miter and bevel. Their settings depend on spring angle or slope plus the included corner. A single equal-miter chart is insufficient.

Use manufacturer tables or a verified compound-angle calculation for the exact orientation. Check fence removal, bevel clearance, and nested capacity in the manual.

Convert every chart entry into a physical test.

Set the disconnected saw, verify locks and clearance, and cut a complete pair or polygon from scrap of the same dimensions. A closed shape exposes accumulated error that one joint can hide.

Adjust calibration or working setting based on the assembled result. Save a labeled sample with the saw-scale reading and stock orientation; it is more useful at the bench than an unlabeled number.
