How to use an angle finder for miter cuts

An angle finder is useful only when you know which surfaces it references and whether its display shows the included angle, a bisected miter, or an offset from square.

A simple bevel gauge captures an angle without numbers and transfers it to layout. A digital angle finder may display the opening between arms. A dedicated protractor may also calculate the equal miter setting. Read its manual and verify each mode on a known 90-degree corner.
