Miter saw smoking: stop and identify the source

Smoke at the kerf points toward friction, blade condition, feed, or stock. Smoke or burning odor from the motor, switch, cord, battery, or vents indicates an electrical or mechanical fault that requires immediate isolation.

Remove energy and watch for continuing heat.

Release the trigger, keep the head and work controlled as the manual directs, and wait for the blade to stop. Unplug the cord or remove the battery only if it is safe to approach. Clear people from the area and monitor for continued smoke, heat, arcing, or flame.

Remove and inspect the blade for pitch, dullness, chipped carbide, warp, correct direction, material rating, and mounting. Verify fence and table alignment, stable stock support, free offcut movement, and a feed rate that maintains blade speed without dwelling.

Some dense, resinous, wet, stressed, or finished stock behaves differently. Test only after every cause is addressed, using clean representative scrap and normal guarding. Stop again at the first smoke or abnormal force.
