Miter saw blade not spinning: diagnose without bypassing safeguards

A no-spin symptom can come from power, a battery or cord, transport or spindle locks, a jam, switch interlock, brushes, motor controls, or mechanical damage. The safe order begins with disconnection.

Separate no power, motor sound, and mechanical lock.

Note whether lights work, the motor hums, the blade twitches, the trigger feels abnormal, an error indicator appears, or nothing happens. Record what changed immediately before the fault, such as a blade change, battery swap, transport, overload, jam, or angle adjustment.

Stop after the first safe observation. Repeated triggering can overheat a stalled motor, arc a failing switch, drain a battery, or make an intermittent fault harder to locate.

Check the source without defeating protection.

For a corded saw, inspect the cord and plug, verify the outlet with an appropriate method, and confirm the extension cord meets the manual. Reset only a protective device whose cause is understood and whose instructions permit it.

For cordless saws, remove and inspect the compatible battery, confirm charge and temperature status, clean contacts only as directed, and try another known-good approved pack if the manufacturer recommends that test. Never bridge terminals or defeat battery electronics.

Inspect the stationary mechanism while disconnected.

Confirm the transport lock is released for operation and the spindle lock is not stuck engaged. Inspect for packed debris, a loose throat insert, damaged guard, incorrect blade stack, or contact with a fence or accessory.

Rotate the blade by hand only when the manual instructs and the power source is removed. Use the blade body or approved tool position, avoiding sharp teeth. Resistance, scraping, or a locked spindle is a reason for service, not added force.

Stop where the manual stops.

Some models permit external brush inspection; others use brushless motors or sealed controls. Follow only listed maintenance. Do not bypass trigger interlocks, guards, overload devices, switches, or battery communication to see whether the motor will run.

Use authorized service for burning odor, smoke, melted insulation, repeated breaker trips, internal arcing, seized bearings, damaged spindle lock, or a fault that persists after permitted checks. Return to service only after normal unloaded operation and guard movement are verified.
